1+1 Year Post-Doctoral Position for Advanced Marine Structures

The above mentioned position is located in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Marine Technology research group and Advanced Steel Structures focus area, see the following webpage: http://mecheng.aalto.fi/en/research/solid_mechanics/steel_structures/

The Department of Mechanical Engineering gives degree programs and conducts research in the disciplines of engineering design, production methods for various materials, solid and fluid mechanics, and in their challenging application areas, such as marine technology. Marine Technology concentrates on ship structures and strength, Arctic technology, ship hydrodynamics and safety of marine traffic. Advanced ship structures is one of the key research topics of Marine Technology group. The personnel concentrating on the advanced marine structures consist of two professors and altogether eight Post-Docs and doctoral students. The main research area for the future can be divided to the following topics:

  • In-depth understanding the response and strength of ship structures resulting from ad-vanced steels and production methods
  • Development of effective analysis methods for challenging application cases
  • The most important research area for these topics is a comprehensive understanding of the structural response and strength based on experimental facts. In terms of response, the focus is on understanding complex structural systems such as passenger ships and steel sandwich panels. In strength assessment understanding the physical phenomena associated to fatigue, ultimate and collision strength are in the focus. For this group a 1+1 year post doc positions will be opened. The applicants should have experience on some of the following research areas:
  • Lightweight steel structures: e.g. thin panels, high strength steel, sandwich structures
  • Limit state assessment  for fatigue, ultimate or collision strength
  • Analytical, numerical and experimental analysis of structures with reliability and optimisation

  • CV
  • List of publications
  • Motivation letter
  • Copy of your best article and
  • Copy of an article which you think would have the best adequacy to the research performed in the research group of Marine Technology
