We invite applications for one (1) PostDoc or PhD candidate position on the field of brain imaging and product development. The position is open in the Brain and Mind Laboratory at the Department of Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering, supervisor being professor Mikko Sams. This research is conducted in close collaboration with Aalto University Design Factory empathy research team headed by Professor Katja Hölttä-Otto. Our research aims at measuring various aspects of empathy between users and product developers through behavioral, physiological and brain imaging methods and testing whether empathy can be transmitted to other product developers on the design process.
Given the truly interdisciplinary nature of our study, we are looking for highly interdisciplinary oriented applicants. Candidates should have background in fMRI experimental research and/or physiological measurement and analysis (such as EMG, ECG and GSR). Previous experience with coding/scripting/programming in languages such as python, Matlab, R or others is an important requirement. Candidates are expected to participate in every step of the research process, from experimental design and data collection to advance analysis of the data and interpretation of findings. The project also involves a close and frequent collaboration between the Brain and Mind Laboratory and Design Factory. The candidate will be working in close collaboration with a PhD candidate who is working in Design Factory on the same project.
Salary and contract terms
The expected duration of doctoral studies is four years, but a contract is first made for one year, and the extension is subject to advance of studies and research. The expected starting salary for a PhD candidate is approx. 2400 €/month. The employment contract for a postdoctoral researcher is for 2–3 years, with an option for renewal. The expected starting salary for postdoctoral researcher is approx. 3600 €/month and salary level depends on the candidate`s experience and qualifications. Salaries in Aalto University follow the university salary system. The annual workload of research and teaching staff at Aalto University is 1624 hours. The contract includes occupational healthcare services.
