Project Employee in Human-Computer Interaction

The Department of Communications and Networking (COMNET) at the Aalto University School of Electrical Engineering is looking for a project employee to join cutting-edge efforts in computational design of web services, and in particular 1) automatic web UI generation using machine learning and optimization and 2) data-driven design of web interfaces. The successful candidate will help us realize novel methods for real-time computational generation and refinement of Web UIs for the benefit of people.

The User Interfaces group, headed by Assoc. Prof. Antti Oulasvirta and funded by the European Research Council (ERC), is a leading group in the area of modeling and optimization of user interface designs. It has a strong track record in the top venues of HCI, including CHI, UIST, and IUI. The group has previously studied the principles of computational design of keyboards, menu systems, gestural interaction, interaction techniques, information search, and interaction design.

Profile

The ideal candidate should be comfortable with using or acquiring the following work tools or comparable tools applied in our ongoing research projects:

  • Languages: Python, Scala, JS, Node.JS, Vue.JS, React
  • DB: SQL, MongoDB

Further, we would like to encourage applicants with a strong track record in any of the three topics to apply to the open position:

  • Web and Interaction design and related technologies

  • Machine learning, e.g. Bayesian inference, with applications to interactive systems
  • Software Engineering

Also applicants from the industry are welcome to apply. A Master’s degree in computer science, interaction or media design, electrical engineering, neurosciences, cognitive science, or a related area is recommended. The position is fully funded for 1,5 years.  Salary starts at around 2229 EUR/month, but exact salary is negotiable and determined based on skills and merits. Working language is English.
