The “IT in Automation” research group is looking for a PhD candidate for the “Aalto Factory of the Future”. The Aalto Factory of the Future is a research factory to conduct research, innovation and educational activities around emerging trends in industrial automation such as Industry 4.0, Industrial Internet of Things and Flexible Manufacturing. Research projects involve close co-operation with various groups within Aalto University (from the School of Electrical Engineering and the School of Engineering) as well as from leading industries.
The Aalto Factory of the Future aims at developing and demonstrating solutions enabling extreme flexibility of production systems. It evolves around technologies such as robotics, mobile machines, artificial intelligence, distributed computing, edge and cloud computing, active safety, virtual reality, wireless communications, 3D printing, and smart materials.
We are looking for a candidate with a Master degree or equivalent, with a strong background in software development and hands on experience with industrial automation, mechatronics and robotics. In particular, strong programming skills are required. A good bonus is familiarity with formal models of computations. The student will be responsible for the design and implementation of a new automation architecture for the Aalto Factory of the Future.
We offer a PhD position based on a 1+2+1 years contract. Our target is that you will acquire the doctoral degree in four years. The salary is determined based on experience and qualifications according to the salary system of Aalto University. The contract includes occupational health benefits and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.
