Åbo Akademi University invites applications to a position as Associate Professor or Professor in Biochemistry at the Faculty of Science and Engineering, starting 1 August 2021 or as agreed. The location for the professorship is Turku.
The recruitment is carried out following ÅAU’s tenure track system. A fixed-termed tenure track position as Associate Professor includes the opportunity to obtain a tenured position and advancement to full professorship after successful evaluation. An appointment to full Professor is permanent.
Work tasks and qualifications
The field of activity for the position is biochemistry with an emphasis on experimental biochemistry. Applications within all subfields of biochemistry are encouraged.
The responsibilities of an Associate Professor include independent research, leading research projects and raising funding for research. Associate Professors participate in teaching and supervision in general a third of the working time. An Associate Professor is required to have a doctoral degree, solid experience in research, the potential to lead research groups and obtain research funding as well as possess international research experience. Formal pedagogical competence is also required.
The responsibilities of a Professor include scientific research, research based tuition, leading and developing research and teaching activities, raising funding for research and participation in national and international cooperation within one’s field of responsibility in accordance with the Universities Act (558/2009). A Professor is required to have a doctoral degree, solid scientific and formal pedagogical competence, the ability to lead research projects and obtain research funding, experience in international research and leadership skills.

The language requirements at Åbo Akademi University are defined in Section 78 of the University Act (558/2009) and in the Åbo Akademi University internal language instructions (accepted by the University Board 25 February 2010). Foreigners and non-native Finnish citizens are exempt from the requirement to have knowledge of Swedish and Finnish. However, as the administrative and teaching language of the university is primarily Swedish, the person appointed is recommended to acquire such knowledge of Swedish during his or her employment, so that he or she will be able to successfully participate in the faculty's activities in Swedish in the future. Oral and written knowledge of English is necessary for managing the duties of a position successfully.
Salary and work time
The salary for Associate Professors on levels 6-7 and for Professors on levels 8-11 is according to the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid.
Teachers and researchers have a total working time of 1612 hours per year.
