Full Professor of
The Department of Chemistry at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) seeks to appoint a Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry as of 1st October 2020. The position is offered in accordance with § 98 of the 2002 Universities Act in the form of an ongoing contract.
The University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, the Alma Mater Viridis, is a teaching and research center for renewable resources, which are essential for human life. It is BOKU's task to make a key contribution to the conservation and protection of resources for future generations through its wide variety of expertise. Combining natural sciences, engineering and social and economic sciences, its aim is to increase knowledge of the ecologically and economically sustainable use of natural resources. With more than 12,000 students and over 2,500 staff, BOKU is one of Europe's leading universities in the field of life sciences.
Duties and main concerns:
The successful candidate should be a renowned chemist with relevant experience in research and teaching. She/he will organize and undertake methodological research in the fields of molecular and elemental mass spectrometry with applications in ultra-trace and elemental species analysis, metabolomics in industrial biotechnology and the analysis of pollutants. Consequently, the analytical problem-solving competence in the research fields of biotechnology, food and environmental sciences should be reinforced and further developed at the Department of Chemistry.
A strong track record in national and international networking as well as relevant leadership experience for scientific work are important prerequisites for this position. In addition, the applicant should have experience in the planning and implementation of competitive research projects, acquisition of third-party funds, as well as cooperation with non-university research institutions. An important task of this professorship is also personnel development, in particular the fostering of junior scientists.
As part of networking within the „Vienna Institute of BioTechnology“ at the Muthgasse campus (Department of Biotechnology, Department of Applied Genetics and Cell Biology, Department of Nanobiotechnology, Department of Food Science and Technology, Department of Water, Atmosphere and Environment, Department of Materials Sciences and Process Engineering) and with departments from other BOKU campuses, participation in current research areas and cooperation with partner organizations within and outside of the Department of Chemistry is anticipated.
Teaching roles include support of the Bachelor study program „Food and Biotechnology“ focusing on lectures and laboratory exercises in the fields of general, physical and analytical chemistry. In the Master's and doctoral programs, organization in analytical chemistry (in English) is also expected.
Excellent departmental infrastructure will be available to the candidate, while maintenance and reinforcement of competences in the fields of elemental and molecular mass spectrometry are expected in return from the applicant.
