The School of Public Policy will be a bilingual, interdisciplinary professional graduate school designed to support policymakers and policymaking in Qatar and the region and thus improve public policy outcomes. Although benchmarked with a focus on global policy, the school will be grounded in Arab and Islamic culture and the unique nation-building experience of Qatar.
As part of HBKU, which was founded in 2010, the School of Public Policy will join HBKU’s other leading institutions in promoting QF’s vision of unlocking human potential. HBKU, a homegrown research university, is a catalyst for positive transformation in Qatar and the region while having global impact. The School of Public Policy is expected to work closely with HBKU’s five existing and thriving colleges; College of Health and Life Sciences, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of Islamic Studies, College of Law, and College of Science and Engineering, as well as its innovative research institutes; Qatar Biomedical Research Institute, Qatar Computing Research Institute, and Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute.
Further, the School of Public Policy will benefit from a premier location, Education City, which is home to a number of branch campuses of world leading universities: Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar, Georgetown University in Qatar, HEC Paris, Northwestern University in Qatar, Texas A&M University at Qatar, Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar, Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, and UCL Qatar.
The HBKU colleges and institutes along with the branch campuses house faculty, researchers, and students in a wide range of areas relevant to public policy, including foreign affairs, engineering and science, medicine, business, and design.
The Founding Dean should have exceptional scholarly and professional accomplishments, with research and teaching interests in the field of public policy, and experience in teaching and mentoring graduate students and/or managing graduate programs. Major responsibilities will be to (a) develop and execute a visionary strategic plan and research agenda; (b) oversee the development and launch of innovative multi-disciplinary graduate and executive education programs; and (c) build connections with governmental and non-governmental entities in Qatar and around the world to increase the school’s impact, visibility, and collaboration.
Special emphasis will be on applicants who are established scholars in the field and who also have leadership experience, whether in a university, think-tank, government or private sector, as well as engagement at the global level. The ideal candidate would be fluent in both English and Arabic.
