Laboratory coordinator

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute focusing on human genomics and personalised medicine at the University of Helsinki. In the beginning of 2017 FIMM joined the University of Helsinki’s new life science research centre, Helsinki Institute of Life Science HiLIFE, as an operational unit. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology centre and biobanking infrastructures under one roof, promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalised health and medicine, individualised cancer medicine, and digital molecular medicine. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community.

A laboratory coordinator
for a fixed-term

The research group led by Krister Wennerberg
( is focused on gaining fundamental novel understanding of cancers, their phenotypes and how they can be treated on an individualized level using a chemical systems medicine approach. We currently have an opening for a laboratory coordinator to support an international collaborative cancer precision medicine research project day-to-day operations. The primary activities of the position include, but are not limited to:

• Biomedical research laboratory work for ongoing projects
• Cell culture, molecular biology and biochemistry-based experimental approaches
• General laboratory work including ordering, managing inventories, performing experimental work, developing methods and protocols, managing data, and maintaining equipment

Candidates should have a Bachelor’s or preferably Master’s degree in biotechnology, biology, biochemistry, biomedical laboratory science, engineering, or a related discipline, including proven experience in cell culture and as many as possible of the following: handling of clinical samples, biochemical and molecular techniques, flow cytometry, and laboratory automation. The successful candidate is expected to have excellent problem solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills. In addition, the candidate should be fluent in English, have good interpersonal and communication skills, a service-minded attitude, and be able to work independently as well as within an international team.

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications based on the University salary system.
A contract will be offered initially until 31 December 2018. Extension beyond this is possible depending on the availability of funding and successful review. A trial period of 4 months will be applied.
