The Department of Chronic Diseases, Metabolism and Ageing (CHROMETA) is recruiting an outstanding basic scientist to advance understanding of metabolic diseases in close collaboration with clinical researchers in order to boost translational research of the Metabolic Diseases Research Unit. Our group harbors several labs with excellent track records in metabolic research including fundamental research in bone diseases, type 1 diabetes, hepatology and bariatric surgery in animal models as well as clinical research in nutrition, obesity management, gastroenterology, andrology, geriatrics, and pulmonary diseases. Several of those groups focus on trans‐nutritional care and a better understanding of the mechanisms underlying metabolic changes. To excel in the rapidly evolving and highly competitive field of metabolic diseases, it will be essential to use an integrative approach in the future, as mechanisms and therapeutic effects will have to be studied in various organs (adipose tissue, liver, gut, pancreas, but also muscle, brain, microbiome, immune system etc) at the same time. This approach requires substantial expertise in the nutrition and metabolic field, combined with innovative concepts. The availability of highly specialized equipment in our department (including metabolic and calorimetric rodent facilities, rodent model of bariatric surgery) and neighboring Core facilities (rodent imaging, genomics, metabolomics, microbiome, LC-MS/MS) as well as the proximity of an academic hospital with more than 700 000 out-patients visits each year provide excellent opportunities for metabolic research. Therefore, we wish to expand our group with an expert in the metabolic field, to advance fundamental and translational metabolic research and elaborate collaborations within and outside the CHROMETA department.
You will participate in education within the area of nutrition and metabolic diseases, with a clear commitment for the quality of the academic programs in Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at the Faculty of Medicine.
You will also contribute to the pedagogic project of the faculty through the supervision of master theses and as a promoter of PhD students.
Your teaching will be in accordance with the KU Leuven’s vision on activating and research-based education.
We are offering full-time employment in an intellectually challenging environment. KU Leuven is a research-intensive, internationally oriented university that carries out both fundamental and applied scientific research. It is highly inter- and multidisciplinary focused and strives for international excellence. In this regard, it actively works together with research partners in Belgium and abroad. It provides its students with an academic education that is based on high-quality scientific research.
You will work in Leuven, a historic, dynamic and lively city located in the heart of Belgium, within 20 minutes from Brussels, the capital of the European Union, and less than two hours from Paris, London and Amsterdam.
Depending on your record and qualifications, you will be appointed to or tenured in one of the grades of the senior academic staff: assistant professor, associate professor, professor or full professor. In principle, junior researchers are appointed as assistant professor on the tenure track for a period of 5 years; after this period and a positive evaluation, they are permanently appointed (or tenured) as an associate professor.
