The person will work as a postdoc in a new multidisciplinary joint research group between Luke and Helsinki One Health (HOH) focusing on animal welfare research. Project involves working with internationally leading scientists working on use of sensor systems and machine vision in monitoring of animal health and welfare, recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and animal behavior and welfare.
• Developing new systems to measure fish school behavior and individual fish tracking using computer vision algorithms applied to camera and sonar data.
• Defining relevant behaviors to be measured to assess fish welfare and using them to improve production environment. The Postdoc is expected to work in several research projects focused on RAS, but also other aquaculture systems, both in Luke's pilot facility and commercial farms.
• Work involves development of the imaging systems, data analysis, preparation of manuscripts for submission to peer-reviewed journals and preparing funding applications as both primary investigator and collaborator.
The person will work at Viikki campus in Helsinki where both Luke and UH offices are located with periodic visits to Laukaa RAS experimental facility. The vacancy is initially for 2 years with a possibility of 1-year continuation (2+1).
In practice, success in the position requires knowledge and experience in developing computer vision models or other machine learning based systems. Data analysis skills and expertise in at least one numerical programming language (e.g. Python, Julia, C++ or Matlab) are required. PhD degree from engineering, biology or statistics or other relevant field is required. We also appreciate prior research and experience in fish production systems or animal welfare studies. Knowledge of deep learning and deep learning frameworks is considered as an advantage.
We expect the candidate to be highly committed to science and capable of conducting independent research in the appropriate field of the position. She/he should have fluent written and oral communication skills in English and good collaboration skills for working in a (multidisciplinary) team. The candidate should also be skilled in writing scientific publications and communicating the research results.
The person to be appointed to the postdoctoral researcher position should have completed his/her doctoral degree within the past four years (excluding maternity leaves, parental leaves, military service or other similar reasons). A doctoral degree must be completed at the time of accepting the position.

The position is at complexity level 8 in Luke's salary system. Therefore, the position-specific salary component is EUR 3 165,51 per month. In addition to the position-specific salary component, a salary component based on personal performance will be paid. It can be at most 50% of the position-specific salary component.
