The Children’s Cancer Research Institute - CCRI (St. Anna Kinderkrebsforschung) is Austria’s leading center for research aimed at advancing the diagnosis and treatment of children’s cancer. It pursues an ambitious basic, translational and clinical research program, including areas such as cancer biology, immunology, and genetics/epigenetics (http://science.ccri.at/). CCRI is part of a flourishing biomedical research hub at the heart of Vienna. It is a renowned research institution with tight links to the St. Anna Children’s Hospital, a leading pediatric cancer center in Europe that is internationally well-connected through European and global networks.
The research group epigenome-based precision medicine lead by Eleni Tomazou (https://science.ccri.at/research/research-areas/solid-tumours/epigenome-based-precision-medicine/) seeks to recruit a postdoctoral researcher who will take on a highly ambitious research project aimed at characterizing and reprogramming the tumor microenvironment in Ewing sarcoma, which is one of the most deadly cancers in children and young adults.
This project builds on our recent discovery that Ewing sarcoma is an enhancer disease (Tomazou et al. 2015 Cell Reports; Sheffield et al. 2017 Nature Medicine). It is funded by a grant from the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (https://www.wwtf.at/programmes/life_sciences/#LS18), supporting cutting-edge research in Vienna.
We will establish comprehensive maps of the tumor microenvironment in patient samples using state-of-the-art omics technologies (e.g., single-cell epigenome and transcriptome sequencing). Moreover, we will perform high-throughput functional assays including co-culture experiments and CRISPR screening to establish tumor microenvironment reprogramming as a potential therapeutic strategy for childhood cancers.
This work will be done in collaboration with the team of Christoph Bock at the CeMM Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (http://www.medical-epigenomics.org/), providing first-hand access to the latest technology for genome analysis and CRISPR screening (including CRISPR single-cell sequencing, CROP-seq) as well as long-standing experience in high-throughput bioinformatics.
This is a full-time, fixed-term (4 years) postdoctoral position following the salary scheme of the Austrian Science Fund (https://www.fwf.ac.at/en/research-funding/personnel-costs/).
Applicants should hold a PhD, or are in the final stages of completing their pre-doctoral research, in a relevant field of wet-lab experimental biology (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, molecular oncology) or computational biology (e.g., bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science). Key requirements include at least one first-author publication from their PhD as well as a strong motivation for pursuing ambitious, internationally competitive research in a fast-moving field. Postdoctoral researchers will have the opportunity to develop and lead their own projects, while also contributing to collaborative research projects both within the lab and with external collaborators and guiding PhD students. A proven track record of effective teamwork and early evidence of scientific leadership is a plus.
