PhD Research Studentships in Metal 3D Printing

The Department of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Trinity College Dublin, invites applications for two PhDs studentships focused on metal 3D printing. Both PhDs positions are linked to a recently awarded project funded through SFI (Science Foundation Ireland) and an industry partner. The successful candidates will be affiliated to the AMBER (Advanced Materials and BioEngineering Research) centre and STAM (Science and Technology of Advanced Manufacturing) research group.

Both projects will focus on metal 3D printing using SLM (selective Laser Melting) of biomedical grade Ti-6Al-4V for the purpose of orthopaedic implant devices. Research will focus on the following areas:

  • Material Characterisation (mechanical properties, grain structure, porosity, defects, powder)
  • Post processing (heat treatment, hot isostatic pressing, machining, polishing)
  • Design for Additive Manufacture (DFAM)
  • In-process process monitoring

Candidates will develop state-of-the-art skills within the full 3D printing cycle (CAD model, support structure development, optimising processing parameters and scan strategies, 3D printing on different machine platforms, post processing, experimental testing. Candidates will join an establish research group with expertise in metal 3D printing and will also work closely with the partnering company.

Standard duties and Responsibilities of the Post

  • Conduct state-of-the-art research in the area of metal 3D printing using SLM under the supervision of Prof. Daniel Trimble and Prof. Rocco Lupoi.
