The Faculty of Arts invites applications for the position of
PROFESSOR/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR/ASSISTANT PROFESSOR IN SCANDINAVIAN LANGUAGES
The field of the position is Scandinavian languages, particularly teaching and research in the Swedish language.
The successful applicant may be appointed to a permanent professorship or a fixed-term assistant/associate professorship (tenure track system), depending on their qualifications and career stage.
The appointee will conduct and supervise scientific research. Experience in broad-based research on the Swedish language is considered an asset. The appointee will be responsible for the education provided to Swedish-language students, including the training of native language and literature teachers for Swedish-language schools. Furthermore, the appointee must be able to provide education based on their own research, supervise theses and dissertations as well as postdoctoral researchers, and manage research projects. The duties of the position also include public engagement with a number of central Swedish-language representatives and institutions in Finland. Experience in national and international research collaboration is considered an asset.
The appointee will work at the Department of Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies, University of Helsinki, providing education in the Master’s Programme in Scandinavian Languages and Literatures, the Bachelor’s Programme in the Languages and Literatures of Finland and the Doctoral Programme in Language Studies. The appointee will provide instruction in, among other topics, linguistic variation, including language and society, as well as Swedish-language dialects in Finland.
An appointee to the position of assistant professor/associate professor shall hold a doctoral degree and have the ability to conduct independent scholarly work as well as the teaching skills necessary for the position. In addition, the appointee must have the ability and motivation to pursue an academic career, as demonstrated by publications and other means.
An appointee to a professorship shall hold a doctoral degree and possess top-level scholarly qualifications and experience in the supervision of scientific research, as well as the ability to provide top-level research-based teaching and to supervise theses and dissertations. In addition, the appointee shall present documentation of international cooperation in the research field they represent. Furthermore, the position also calls for academic leadership skills.
An appointee to a position involving teaching and research is required to be competent in the language in which they provide instruction. The language of instruction for the professorship in Scandinavian languages is Swedish. The appointee must also have at least satisfactory oral and written skills in Finnish. Foreign citizens, non-native Finnish citizens or citizens who have not been educated in Finnish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application.
When considering the applicant’s qualifications, attention will be paid to scientific and teaching merits. Scientific qualifications include scientific publications and other research results of scientific value, success in obtaining external research funding, scientific work outside Finland and international elected positions. Teaching qualifications include teaching experience and pedagogical training, the ability to produce learning materials, other teaching merits and, if necessary, a teaching demonstration, as well as participation in doctoral education. Furthermore, account will be taken of the applicant’s leadership and interaction skills, as well as activity in the research community.
The salary will be based on levels 7 (assistant/associate professor) or 8–10 (professor) of the job requirement scheme for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The annual salary of a professor is approximately €64,000–96,000, while that of an assistant/associate professor is approximately €50,000–68,500, depending on the previous experience and qualifications of the appointee.
