Department of History and Ethnology is currently seeking to recruit an
Associate Professor (tenure track), History of crises and societal change, starting August 1st 2017 or as soon as possible thereafter for a fixed-term period of five years.
The Associate Professor’s position is located to the Department of History and Ethnology, to the discipline of History. The Department of History and Ethnology at the University of Jyväskylä conducts high-quality research and trains experts in history and ethnology to process and to produce knowledge about cultural phenomena in different time periods. A particular area of emphasis in the Department’s research profile is the comparative study of crises and societal change in a long-term perspective.
The Associate Professor’s field of expertise is history, more specifically the history of crises and societal change. Her/his duties focus on the study of Finnish and Nordic societies in a long-term perspective.
The successful applicant is expected to strengthen the research profile of the University of Jyväskylä and to contribute to the emerging field ”Multidisciplinary research on crises and societal change” and to the research profile of the Department of History and Ethnology. The Associate Professor is expected to participate in the activities of the research clusters within the department.
The Associate Professor’s main duties are active research, the direction of research projects and participation in international co-operation in research and teaching. Other essential duties are the supervision of doctoral dissertations and master’s theses as well as teaching at the undergraduate and post-graduate levels. The Associate Professor’s duties also include the development of research and teaching in accordance with the strategy of the University, in a way that combines the disciplines within the Department of History and Ethnology. The Associate Professor will be expected to acquire external research funding and to participate in the administration of the Department.
The successful applicant must have strong previous merits in the study of crises and societal changes and experience in the study of Finnish and/or Nordic and European societies in a long-term perspective. Success in acquiring external research funding, supervising doctoral dissertations and master’s theses as well as administrative experience will be regarded as assets. A strong international research profile, experience in teaching and supervision and merits in the direction of research groups will be emphasized in the evaluation. In addition, the applicant is expected to possess broad and versatile knowledge of different theories, methods and source materials and strong merits in applying them to research, teaching and research projects.

The appointment is for a fixed period of five years, see tenure track path. An especially distinguished and unquestionably qualified person may exceptionally be appointed directly to the position of professor presuming there is no candidate available who is more competent and suitable candidate for the position. The purpose of the fixed-term is, that the Associate Professor gathers enough merits for full Professor position. When an employee has been selected for a fixed-term associate professorship, an evaluation procedure is used regarding the employee’s merits for a professorship filled through an invitation procedure. The evaluation procedure shall begin before the end of the fixed-term contract. The evaluation procedure follows the same practices used in the expert evaluation procedure for filling a professorship.
The Associate Professor’s job-specific salary component is based on the job demands levels 7 (3 851,33 €/month) according to the salary system concerning teaching and research staff at universities. In addition, a personal performance-based salary component amounting to the maximum of 46,3% of the job-specific salary component is also paid.
Four months trial period is applied to the filling of the position.
