Field and Location
The Faculty of Technology at the University of Oulu announces a tenure track position in the area of Control Engineering. The position is located in the Research Unit of Control Engineering (CE).
Digitalization and ICT will continue their advancement in all fields of automation, be it automation in machines and processes, building and construction, traffic and cars, agriculture, etc. In process automation they will improve the existing possibilities for collecting and saving big (process and manufacturing) data, modelling and analyzing both fast and extremely slow phenomena and controlling difficult processes, so that they are safe for both the operators and environment.
The Control Engineering Research Unit has a long experience in modelling, simulation, optimization and control of industrial processes in wood-based industry, mining and metallurgy. Recent work includes also energy and environment, and management and control needs in infrastructures, e.g. automation in buildings. The group consists of eight postdocs (Doctors of Science in Technology) and five doctoral students.
This position will be responsible for teaching the basic skills of using ICT in measurement processing, experiment design, modelling and control. Additionally, it will study, how to use excessively available data at process and mill optimization levels (software sensors, process analytics and monitoring and optimization, control orchestration, etc.). The research focus will be in minerals processing and in processes involving solids. Both the teaching and research in this position must be in good agreement with other operations in the research group, and the applicant has a possibility to characterize his/her ideas in his/her research and action plans.
Success in this position requires a good understanding of process phenomena and how to measure them, excellent modelling skills and enough experience in working with real-world applications in automation and/or communications industry. Project managing skills proven also in industrial environment, and international experience and networking are necessary to guarantee the possibilities in getting outside financing for the unit.
Job Responsibilities and Required Qualifications
The tenure track position is open to highly talented individuals who hold a doctoral degree and have excellent potential for a successful scientific career. Based on their experience and competence, applicants will position themselves on one of the three levels in the tenure track system, i.e. Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Full Professor.
A person at any level of the academic tenure track system is expected to conduct outstanding world class scientific research, to be competitive in attracting outside funding, to publish in leading journals and conferences, to teach, supervise and advance doctoral, graduate and undergraduate students, to give undergraduate and postgraduate education, to be an active member of the international scientific community, and to exhibit academic leadership. Individuals placed on tenure track at the University of Oulu have the possibility to advance in their career through regular performance assessments, which take into account their merits in all these areas.
Required qualifications at each level of the tenure track system are the following:
The position of an assistant professor is for persons who have recently finished their doctoral dissertation and are advancing towards a professional research career. The position is always fixed-term and the duration varies from three to five years. A continuation period may be granted as defined in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines. Only doctors who have finished their doctoral thesis less than ten years ago can be appointed to the position of an assistant professor.
The selection criteria for an assistant professor are the following:
•Research potential, (publications, especially internationally refereed publications; participating in acquiring funding/funding granted; connections with the international community in the field)
•In most fields, working abroad is common during a professional research career
•Demonstrating developed skills is a prerequisite for a continuation period
•University pedagogy competence
When appointing a person to the position of an associate professor the applicants are evaluated based on the following criteria:
•Publications on an international level: dissemination, quality of the publication forums, references to the publications
•Active role in research training
•Acquisition of additional funding
•Working in more than one research facility during one’s career (in most fields represented at the University of Oulu this signifies working abroad)
•An active role in the international scientific community
•Acknowledgements and awards
•University pedagogy competence
The position of an associate professor is initially a fixed-term position for five years, but a continuation period may be granted or the position may be made permanent. Being granted continuation for the position requires meeting of the above-mentioned criteria as well as successful research work as indicated in the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines.
Under the section 33 of the Universities Act, the required qualifications for the professor position include a doctoral degree, high quality scientific or artistic competence, experience in supervising scientific research, ability to give high quality education based on research and to supervise theses, as well as evidence for international collaboration in his/her field of research. In this case, the professor should also show necessary practical experience on the above-mentioned areas.
When assessing the candidate’s merits, issues taken into consideration include peer-reviewed scientific publications and other research results with scientific value, teaching experience and pedagogical training, skills to create teaching material, other teaching merits, the demonstration lecture, and the doctoral theses the candidate has supervised.
At all levels, especially the following merits will be taken into consideration: practical familiarity with the field in question; success in acquiring supplementary funding; scientific work abroad; and experience in working in international projects. A particular emphasis is also paid to the requested research and action plan.
The salary of the appointed researcher will be based on the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff of Finnish Universities. In addition to the basic salary of the appropriate tenure track level, supplementary salary will be given for personal achievements and performance, the sum rising to a maximum of 46.3 % of the basic salary level for the post. The salary will amount roughly 3,300 – 4,800 euros per month for an assistant professor, 3,900 – 5,500 euros per month for an associate professor and 5,400 – 8,500 euros per month for a full professor.

The selection procedure will be carried out by a recruitment committee and the Research Council of the University of Oulu according to the University of Oulu Tenure Track guidelines.
Applicants are kindly asked to prepare for the situation in which, after the closing of the application period, the Faculty might request them to submit at most 10 publications of their choice to be sent to the reviewers. The publications must be submitted as a single PDF file.
The position is filled as of 1.10.2018 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of 6 months is applied in the position.
Interview and Proposal by the Recruitment Committee
The recruitment committee analyses the reviewers’ evaluations, interviews the candidates and makes the proposal for appointment.
Based on the proposal of the recruitment committee, the Dean will make her proposition to the Research Council. After the approval of the Research Council, employment contract will be prepared in accordance with the Rector’s decision.
