The University of Tampere Faculty of Communication Sciences (COMS) invites applications for the position of Professor or Associate Professor in Information Studies and Interactive Media (tenure track), specialising in information retrieval.
The field of Information Studies examines the phenomena and concepts related to the transmission, organisation, provision, retrieval and use of information. The aim is to train experts in the information field (e.g. information services, information and knowledge management), who have a professional and analytical approach to examining phenomena in the rapidly-changing information society. The progamme provides an analytical overview of the developing digital forms of media as a part of human activities and the opportunity to specialise in multiple areas of information studies and interactive media.
The professor/associate professor will carry out and supervise scientific research, provide and promote education in the field, follow developments in science in the field and participate in social interaction and international cooperation in his/her field.
The professor/associate professor will provide theoretical and methodological education in his/her own field of study and supervise master’s theses and doctoral dissertations.

The salary for this post is based on level 8–9 (professor) and 7 (associate professor) of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff in the University Salary System. The starting salary of a professor will range between € 4800 and € 6400 and salary of an associate professor will range between € 4000 and € 4700 a month.
The post has a trial period of four months. The duties will begin on 1 August 2019 or as agreed.
Phases of the recruitment process
Provisions on the appointment of a professor are laid down in section 33 of the Universities Act and sections 14–20 of the University of Tampere’s Regulations on Human Resources. The expert evaluation procedure will be used in filling the position. An appointment committee will be established for the task. The appointment committee will select the applications to be sent to external experts for evaluation. The appointment committee will interview the applicants and may ask them to present their research. The teaching merits of the applicants will be assessed by the faculty’s Teaching Skills Committee, which may request the applicants to provide a demonstration of their teaching proficiency. The rector will decide on the appointment of persons for the post of professor or associate professor (tenure track). In recruitment under the tenure track system and when advancement to the next level of the career model is considered, the expert evaluation procedure is always applied.
